Dance For Yourself
A Blog For Dancers
We just are just finishing up a wonderful first week of dance classes! Here are 11 things that you probably experienced this week.
1.Everyone Has Some Nerves
From the tearful 3 year old, to the 6 year old that all of a sudden doesn’t want to go to the class they have been talking about all summer, to the butterflies in the stomach of the teenager who masks her nerves behind little giggles, to the parent who thinks about that after school schedule over and over …EVERYONE gets nervous when trying something new. And you know what? It’s okay to be nervous! Even teachers are nervous the first week! I am the director of the school, and have been teaching some of the exact same classes with the same students for years, and I STILL get a little nervous the first week of classes, because every season brings something a little bit different to get used to.
2. You Get a Little Overwhelmed By the Crowd
Every parent comes to dance the first week, sometimes two or more family members per dancer, so you can count on the waiting area being a little crowded the first week! As the year progresses, everyone will figure out what routine works best for them. From doing homework in the car, to running to the grocery store, to walking to a nearby coffee shop for a treat, or playing in our new toy area; the possibilities are endless for filling time while you are waiting for your dance classes.
3. You Come Up With Creative Dance Wear Fixes
That dance wear order didn’t arrive yet? Better yet, forgot that you needed new dance clothes? Yep, we’ve all been there. Even some of our teachers pull out dance shoes to realize there is hole or one has gone missing! It’s okay, that’s what the first few weeks of dance class are for, to help us all realize what we need and get us prepared for a great season.
So put on those leggings and cute t-shirt, adorn those socks until your ballet shoes come, or duck tape your dance shoes back together until the new ones arrive. One way or another, I am sure you will put your creativity to use with an Awesome dance wear fix!
4. You are always thinking, “What Class do I have today?”
Getting into a routine is so important! Chances are, if you danced on a different day last season you will be checking and double checking that schedule to get the new schedule set in your mind. Maybe you know the day and time, but then there is figuring what shoes to put on first, what class is first? We are right there with you, still checking the schedule everyday until it get’s set in our heads.
5. Your Little Dancer Does More Watching Than Dancing.
Don’t be surprised to see your little dancers observe more than they participate the first few weeks. This is perfectly normal, it is all so new and many young dancers have never been in a class-participation environment before. Your little one may come home thinking they actually did everything as they participated fully in their imaginations! Just give it a week or two and they will be dancing non-stop!
6. That Ballet Bun Surprises You.
Maybe you’ve been concerned about making that first ballet bun or you’re a pro after years of dance class. Either way, you can bet there will be surprises the first week of class! It could be that you allotted a full 30 minutes to tackle your first day of dance, and that hair practically whipped itself up in 5 minutes! Or, you knew you had this bun thing down and then sure enough, your out of pins or your ponytail breaks! One way or another, the first week of dance is sure to throw a surprise your way!
7. You get an awesome picture.
Always forget that first day of dance picture? Not this year! The photo area in the lobby ensures you get an adorable picture to capture that first week of dance. Be sure to hang on to that, you never know how precious these memories will be years down the road.
8. Your dance class includes an introduction to lots of things
The first week of dance class is a wonderful time to make sure everyone learns their teacher’s expectations, classroom rules and what the students can expect from the class. Many teachers will discuss these things during the first class. Your first class may move a little slow at first as the teacher gets an idea of where the students are and the dancers learn the exercises and class format.
9. You Have Sore Muscles
Theres nothing like waking up to sore muscles to let you know dance is back! Junior and Upper Division students can expect to have some muscle soreness after the first few classes. Dance is very athletic and it is perfectly normal (and good!) for dancers to experience muscle soreness as they build muscle and gain flexibility. So take a warm bath, drink lots of water and look forward to your next class!
10. You Love Meeting New Friends
There’s no friends quite like dance friends! The first week of classes gives you the opportunity to meet new friends in your class or the class down the hall. Don’t pass up a chance to make a new friend as you see new faces at the studio! Dance friends often end up being life-long friends.
11. You Realize How Much You Love Dance!
Maybe it’s the friends, the music, the chance for expression during free worship or the teacher; maybe you can’t put a finger on one thing, but you know you’re hooked. There’s nothing quite like challenging your body, moving to music and feeling loved and accepted. And that’s it, you’ve caught the dance bug and your life will never quite be the same again… in the best of ways! Welcome to the journey, we can’t wait to enjoy it with you!
